The Definitive Handbook: Welcoming a New Cat into Your Home
In celebration of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, an occasion we believe should be observed every month, our team aims to guide you in seamlessly integrating a new cat into your household. Cats are sensitive creatures, and entering a new environment, particularly if other animals have already staked their claim, can be stressful for them.
If you’re bringing home a new cat, whether it’s one, two, or three, follow these recommendations from our team to ensure they feel welcome.
#1: Establish a secure space for your new cat
It may take several days for your new cat to feel at ease around you, and even longer for them to acclimate to your household if you have other pets. Assist your cat in feeling safe and secure in their new surroundings by providing them with their own designated area. Confine your feline companion to a spacious room equipped with their own litter box, food and water bowls, scratching post, and bedding. This way, they won’t have to compete for these essential resources. Spend ample time playing, petting, and interacting with your new cat to help them become familiar with your presence, but also allow them uninterrupted time to explore on their own.
#2: Maintain their current diet
The stress of transitioning to a new environment can upset a cat’s delicate digestive system. To minimize further stress, continue feeding them the same food they were accustomed to. If you intend to switch to a different diet, give them a few days to settle in with their current food before gradually introducing the new food over the course of a week.
#3: Allow your new cat time to adjust
It may take your cat a week or two to settle into their new home, so it’s best to postpone introductions to family and friends until your pet has grown comfortable with you and their surroundings. However, it is advisable to schedule a meeting with your regular veterinarian to ensure your new cat is healthy and up to date on preventive care. Another trip shortly after their journey to your home can cause additional stress, so give your cat another week to relax before any further introductions.
Congratulations on the newest addition to your family! Our team is excited to meet your new furry companion, so feel free to give us a call and schedule their wellness visit.
